Corporate communication in 2030: what Deloitte’s new report means for communicators

2–3 minutes

Deloitte’s fourth Corporate Affairs report, The Road to 2030, sends a clear signal to communicators: storytelling alone is no longer enough. To stay relevant, you now need to prove commercial impact, master AI, and think strategically.

Here are the key findings for corporate communication professionals.

Storytelling still matters, but it’s not the whole job

Despite the AI hype, storytelling remains a real differentiator. The report says it brings “a humanity that algorithms cannot.” Crafting a narrative that connects is still called “a professional superpower.”

But the bar has moved. With AI generated content everywhere, audiences are wary of anything that sounds synthetic. Communication has to be backed by action, not just words.

The five most in-demand communication skills

52% of leaders are actively reshaping their teams’ skills. The five most sought-after capabilities are:

  1. Commercial understanding
  2. Strategy
  3. Agility and speed
  4. AI literacy
  5. Storytelling

Writing well or media relations alone no longer make the list. Communication skill now means a blend of business fluency and narrative craft.

AI is changing communication, but adoption is still early

Only 24% of teams have a formal AI strategy. Where AI is already used in communication, three use cases stand out:

  • Internal communications, often the first safe testing ground
  • Brand and tone of voice management, keeping messaging consistent across channels
  • Content and creative production, speeding up drafting, video, and design

Treat AI only as a content tool, and your influence shrinks. Treat it as something you actively manage, including its risks to truth and accuracy, and your function grows in value.

Messaging has to prove commercial value

69% of teams still use conventional reputational metrics. But 50% now use strategic indicators, and 26% use economic indicators alongside reputation tracking.

This reflects communication’s core challenge: it is “valuable but hard to value.” The leaders pulling ahead are the ones connecting messaging to numbers the business actually cares about.

Final word

Corporate communication in 2030 won’t be a content function. It will be a strategic discipline that uses storytelling, data, AI, and commercial judgment together to influence real business outcomes. Communicators who build commercial understanding, AI literacy, and stronger measurement now will lead the function forward.
